The one and only Marie-Michelle has graced us with her presence again, and we couldn't be happier to have her back. Known for her exquisite haute couture creations for kids, Marie-Michelle uses fabrics that are nothing short of stunning. Her Etsy store description sums it up beautifully: "High-end, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted children's garments made from lush and unconventional fabrics." If you've missed her previous interviews a few years back, you're in for a treat—definitely worth checking out! And don't forget to explore her Oliver + S designs showcased in Sew Beautiful magazine—they're simply delightful. For even more inspiration, head over to her French-language blog, Rastaquouère. We're thrilled she's here today to share her favorite Oliver + S pattern with us. Welcome back, Marie-Michelle! Happy New Year to you all! It’s snowing seals and polar bears here at the base of the Canadian Rockies, and what better time to cozy up inside with a hot cup of tea, some Nina Simone tunes, and a bit of writing? When I was asked to write about my favorite Oliver + S pattern, I found myself reminiscing about the past. It’s been quite some time since I worked on a child-sized pattern, and I realized how much I missed it. Oliver + S patterns have played a crucial role in my sewing journey, and I owe much of my progress to their well-drafted, clean, and straightforward designs along with their clear instructions. While I’ve compulsively made quite a few Bubble Dresses, I’m not one to repeat a pattern too often, and having a son has certainly kept my focus away from little girls' dresses. When it came to picking a pattern, the Ice Cream Dress and blouse instantly caught my eye. I have a soft spot for underdogs, and this pattern, in my view, embodies a lot of heart and potential. The Ice Cream Dress has a chic, mod vibe that’s both sophisticated and playful. As someone who has a deep affection for the 1960s, this pattern perfectly captures the youthful, modern spirit of that era while remaining sweet and polished. [Image description: Line drawing of the Oliver + S Ice Cream Dress, view A] Over the years, I’ve only sewn two versions of the Ice Cream Dress and one blouse, but these pieces hold a special place in my heart. My love for unique fabrics shines through in these creations. The two dress versions feature French rose embroidered silk dupioni, a fabric that’s sadly become hard to find nowadays. I’ve used scraps of this fabric in doll dresses too. [Image description: French rose embroidered silk dupioni fabric] Even though my sewing mentor wasn’t entirely convinced by my fabric choices, I stuck to my guns. I believed my fabric pairings would work and reflect where I came from. I’m glad I did. To me, these dresses carry a certain ruggedness, a quiet elegance, and a connection to my roots in Alberta—a place known for its harsh winters and vast landscapes. [Image description: Finished Ice Cream Dress with pleated details] This pattern goes beyond just three loose-fitting strips with patch pockets. The gently sloping kimono sleeves won me over right away! [Image description: Ice Cream Dress with a recycled branch button] Using unusual or heirloom notions, like the recycled branch button from Western Canadian forests or the carved bone ladybug button, adds character and tells a story. [Image description: Ice Cream Dress with a carved bone button] If you prefer a more uniform look, you can always try color blocking with similar fabrics. The Ice Cream dress is designed with color blocking in mind, and it’s a trend that’s been big on runways lately. Playing with color is a great way to express creativity and connect with memories and emotions, allowing you to weave personal narratives into the garments you create.
