color blocked cartwheel wrap dress tutorial

Darcy has joined us today from the Advisors Circle. Recently, she stopped by to share her favorite patterns from Oliver + S and her Liesl + Co. Terrace Dress. Now, she's back to demonstrate how to create a stunning color-blocked version of the Cartwheel Wrap Dress. Over to you, Darcy!

Oliver + S Cartwheel Wrap Dress

Hello everyone! I’m thrilled to share an exciting twist on the Cartwheel Wrap Dress pattern that adds a touch of uniqueness—color blocking! This simple modification turns a classic design into something truly special.

I chose solid-colored fabrics for this project, but you can absolutely experiment with bold prints to create a playful and eye-catching ensemble. It’s all about personalizing your creation!

To begin, I started with a pattern I had already tested for fit—it was a size 4 for my daughter, which I extended by adding 3 inches in length using techniques from the Building Block Dress Book. I envisioned three distinct sections, so after marking the seam allowances, I measured the front center and divided it into thirds to establish my color-blocking zones.

Next, I referenced the Building Block Dress Book for guidance on color-blocking. I sketched the new lines, added seam allowances, and cut out the fabric accordingly. Once the pieces were ready, I reassembled the skirt panels and continued following the original instructions for the dress. The process was smooth and rewarding.

The result? A delightful dress that’s both fun to sew and visually striking. Sewing the shoulder and underarm seams felt like pure magic. If you’ve tried it before, you’ll know exactly what I mean!
