Auditing Office of the United States Finds Low Levels of Formaldehyde in Clothing

On September 14, 2010, according to the news from the China Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report on formaldehyde levels in textiles and apparel products. There are consumer-related risks.

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a strong pungent odor. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies it as a carcinogen, and the formaldehyde in Chapter 112 of the Air Cleaning Act is classified as a harmful pollutant to the air. This substance is commonly used as a preservative in medical laboratories and mortuaries. In addition, it is also used in other chemicals, wood, household products, glue, iron-free fabrics, and paper product coatings. GAO pointed out that formaldehyde can be used to improve the wrinkle resistance of some clothing and textiles, especially cotton products. It is reported that the skin can cause allergic dermatitis after it comes into contact with clothing containing a lot of formaldehyde, which can affect the immune system and produce symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Currently in the United States, there is no limit to the amount of formaldehyde used in textiles, but there are national standards for the formaldehyde release in wood products.

The report shows that among the 180 items GAO tested, the level of formaldehyde in 94% of the clothing was lower than the national standards for strict formaldehyde content that currently apply in 13 countries. The specifications include: 1. In infants and 3 years old Formaldehyde should not be detected in children's clothing. Second, in the clothing that is in direct contact with the skin of adults or children over 3 years of age, the detected formaldehyde content must not exceed 75 ppm. During the test, only 10 types of clothing exceeded this limit and its content was 75.4 ppm to 206.1 ppm. Includes three shirts, three pillow cases, two pants, a bed sheet, and a hat. Seven are pure cotton and three are cotton blends.

The test results are similar to those previously conducted in the EU, Australia, and New Zealand. The test pass rate in the EU is 96%, and the pass rate in New Zealand is 97%.
