International patent application exceeded 2 million

[China Glass Network] On April 14, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization said in Geneva that the number of international patent applications submitted under the framework of the organization's Patent Cooperation Treaty has exceeded 2 million.
In the past six years, the use of the Patent Cooperation Treaty has grown rapidly, and the number of international patent applications has increased from 1 million to 2 million. In contrast, it took 26 years for international patent applications to reach 1 million in the framework of the treaty. This reflects the continued growth of investment in innovation and the protection of innovative products in the international market. According to the organization, the 2 millionth international patent application was submitted by Qualcomm, a US mobile technology company.
The Patent Cooperation Treaty system was introduced in 1978 to promote information sharing between patent administrations in various countries and to facilitate the retrieval of patent information. International patent applications under the treaty framework have the force of law in 142 countries subject to the treaty. This treaty facilitates the application of patent rights by companies and inventors in multiple countries.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, a few years ago, large users of the Patent Cooperation Treaty system were concentrated in Europe and the United States. With the rise of East Asia, the world's innovation landscape has undergone tremendous changes. By region, there are currently a large number of international patent applications in East Asia. In 2010, China's Patent Cooperation Treaty increased its use by more than 56%, making it the world's fourth largest patent cooperation treaty application.
The Patent Cooperation Treaty has an annual number of international patent applications of approximately 160,000. According to the statistics of the World Intellectual Property Organization, among the top 20 companies in the number of patent applications from 2006 to 2010, Japan’s Matsushita, Royal Philips Electronics and China’s Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. ranked in the top three, and China’s ZTE ranked 16th. In the United States, Motorola, Microsoft, Japan's Mitsubishi Electric and South Korea's Samsung.
