The moment I laid eyes on the Gelato Dress, I knew it was destined to become a summer staple—effortless, stylish, and ready to go at a moment’s notice! But it’s more than that—it’s a blank canvas waiting for your personal touch. Right now, border prints are trending, and they’re a fantastic way to give the Gelato Dress its unique flair.
Working with border prints doesn’t have to be intimidating. Typically, the border runs along the selvage edge, meaning you’ll be cutting the pattern pieces on the crossgrain (the arrow on the pattern will run perpendicular to the selvage). Always double-check your fabric yardage, especially if the border runs along both selvages. Additionally, when laying out your pattern pieces, ensure the side seams align perfectly.
The Gelato dress features a hem with a gentle curve, which plays beautifully with the border print. By positioning the pattern pieces so the hem falls in the negative space below the print, you can create an optical illusion that highlights the curve while keeping the design cohesive.
One of Liesl’s trademarks is adding thoughtful details, and the Gelato dress is no exception. Its playful welt pockets are the perfect spot to inject some extra personality. I decided to add a splash of color here to make them stand out.
To achieve this, I simply cut pattern piece 10 (the pocket lining) from a contrasting fabric and followed the instructions exactly as written in the pattern. This small change made a big impact!
For an added pop of color, I incorporated scalloped edging into the design. I found a video tutorial that showed me exactly how to create this delicate detail.
To apply the edging, I stitched it to the neckline and sleeves with the right sides facing each other, aligning the raw edges. Afterward, I finished the neckline according to the pattern instructions. Since I used the scalloped edging on the sleeves, I skipped the hemming step and instead created a bias strip to match the pattern’s instructions for the neckline.
I’m absolutely smitten with my Gelato dress, and I can already picture myself wearing it all summer long!
