border print gelato dress
Today, we’re thrilled to have Lisa back with us again. She’s part of the esteemed Advisors Circle and has shared some fantastic patterns in the past, like her Chai Tee Dress and Tunic, the Striped Breezy Blouse, and the Rush Hour Blouse with Piping. This time, she’s here to introduce her latest creation—the Gelato Dress.

As soon as I laid eyes on the Gelato Dress, I knew it was the quintessential summer dress—effortless and stylish. But what makes it truly unique is its versatility. It’s a blank canvas that allows you to personalize it however you’d like. Right now, border prints are trending, and they pair beautifully with the Gelato Dress.

Working with border prints isn’t complicated. Typically, the border runs along the selvage, meaning you’ll need to cut the pattern pieces on the cross grain (so the pattern arrows will be perpendicular to the selvage). Always double-check that you’ve purchased enough fabric, especially if the border runs along both selvages, which might require additional yardage. When arranging the pattern pieces, ensure the side seams align properly.

The Gelato Dress features a slightly curved hem. To maintain that shape while incorporating a border print, position the pattern pieces so the hem edge falls in the negative space beneath the print. This visual trick keeps the hem’s curve intact while adding a touch of flair.
One of Liesl’s trademarks is adding thoughtful details, and the Gelato Dress is no exception. It boasts fun welt pockets, which I decided were the perfect spot to inject some color.

To do this, I simply cut the pocket lining (Pattern Piece 10) from a contrasting fabric and followed the instructions as written.

For an extra pop of color, I added a scalloped edging to the dress.

To learn how to create the edging, check out this video tutorial. Attach it to the neckline and sleeves by stitching it right sides together, matching the raw edges. Finish the neckline according to the pattern instructions. Since I used the edging on the sleeves, I skipped hemming them and instead cut an additional bias strip, finishing them similarly to the neckline.

I’m absolutely in love with my Gelato Dress, and I’m confident it’ll see plenty of use this summer!

As someone who loves sewing, I often find myself experimenting with different fabrics and techniques. The Gelato Dress was a fantastic opportunity to play around with bold colors and patterns. If you’re thinking about making one yourself, don’t hesitate—it’s a great project for any level of sewer. And remember, personal touches like welt pockets or scalloped edges can really elevate your garment. Let me know in the comments if you give it a try!
