Versace led the Italian fashion industry counterattack "made in China

In recent weeks, several international media outlets have raised concerns about the future of "Made in Italy," suggesting that the iconic Italian fashion industry might be on the decline. However, this narrative has been strongly challenged by the Versace family and other key figures in the Italian fashion world. The controversy began with an article published in the German magazine *Fashion Trends*, which claimed that "the shift of production to low-cost countries will eventually erase Italy from the global fashion map." The piece further alleged that "many fashion designers move their garments to China, label them 'Made in Italy,' and sell them for an additional 3,000 euros." The *Süddeutsche Zeitung* even referred to Italy as a "fashion tomb." On the other side of the Atlantic, the *New York Times* suggested that "Italian fashion is undergoing a transformation," while the *Wall Street Journal* warned that "with growing pressure to cut costs, many luxury brands may have no choice but to move most of their manufacturing out of Italy and into countries like China." This has led to speculation that the "Italian Design" label could soon vanish from the market. France has also joined the debate, with *Le Figaro* reporting that "the economic crisis has accelerated the relocation of Italian industries abroad." Meanwhile, Italian media have largely echoed these foreign reports, reflecting a growing sense of concern within the country. However, the Versace family has not remained silent. In response to the criticism, Santo Versace, brother of the late Gianni Versace, dismissed the claims as "a joke born out of jealousy." He pointedly reminded the international press that many top creative directors at renowned global brands—such as Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Gucci, Cartier, Richemont, and Calvin Klein—are actually Italian. Mario Boselli, president of the Italian Fashion Association, also rejected the notion that "Made in Italy" would fade away, stating that it is deeply rooted in the country's identity and will continue to thrive. "It will never die because it is 100% Italian," he said. "Italy will always remain number one in the world."
