A bartack is a small yet functional detail you can incorporate into your sewing projects to reinforce fabric at stress points. However, bartacks aren't just practical—they can also serve a decorative purpose, especially if you experiment a bit with your sewing machine. With the recent release of the Liesl + Co. Classic Shirt pattern, you now have an excellent opportunity to apply this technique! But honestly, you can use bartacks on countless other patterns too. I own a fairly advanced sewing machine that offers a wide range of stitches, most of which I must admit I rarely use. My daughter, S, loves to explore them, but I bought the machine primarily for its exceptional automatic buttonhole options, as shown in this picture. (Buttonhole #17 is my personal favorite.) At some point, I started experimenting with decorative bartacks and realized I could probably achieve the same effect using my sewing machine instead of doing it by hand. Since I was aiming for a triangular-shaped bartack, I chose the initial part of stitch #27. Looking back, it might have been simpler to use stitch #30, which is specifically designed as a triangle. Nevertheless, I achieved satisfactory results. I intend to continue experimenting with different stitches to discover new possibilities. Perhaps creating a circular grommet instead of a triangle would add a playful touch. If your machine has embroidery stitches, chances are you can utilize something similar to create bartacks. The key takeaway here is that you don’t need an elaborate machine to replicate these results. Below are the stitch settings used for my triangular bartack. It begins with a stitch width close to zero and rapidly increases to 7.0, all while maintaining a stitch length of 0.4 to ensure the stitches are dense yet not overlapping. After some experimentation with scrap fabric, I managed to produce the following result by simply adjusting the machine manually as I stitched—no fancy embroidery stitches required. Additionally, I’ve added them to a few Classic Shirts because it’s enjoyable to add a splash of color while reinforcing the seams. If you'd like to try this yourself, here are a couple of tips: 1. Keep your fabric taut to prevent puckering when the needle moves back and forth. An embroidery hoop or stabilizer may assist with this. 2. Begin with a narrow stitch width and adjust it wider after every two stitches (zigzag). Lift the needle before changing the width. Continue this process until you reach your maximum stitch width. The larger the jump between widths, the shorter your bartack will be. Let me know how it turns out and where you decide to add them!
