weekend links, rachel edition
Hey there, and happy Friday! Liesl is off enjoying a quick getaway in London this weekend, so she couldn't put together her usual weekend round-up. Since she's traveling, I thought I'd share a few things I've been thinking about lately.
Even though Fashion Revolution Week is over for this year, I still found it inspiring. It reminded me how much I need to fix my favorite pair of jeans—they’ve seen better days and now have a noticeable hole. I’m eager to give visible mending a try, maybe using Sashiko stitching like Katrina Rodabaugh does. Her work on Instagram is incredible, and if you’re not already following her, you definitely should! She runs workshops on visible mending, but unfortunately, they’re not happening near me. I’m secretly hoping Creativebug will reach out to her to create some video classes. Her blog post titled "Slow Fashion is a Revolution" is also worth checking out!

I’ve been eyeing this book on Sashiko, and I’m itching to find a fun design to create something beautiful, just like Sara did.
About a year ago, my daughter got hooked on the Sew Zoey book series. Aimed at kids aged eight to twelve, the fourteenth book in the series dropped last month. The basic premise is that Zoey’s middle school stops requiring uniforms, and she struggles to find clothes she likes. So, she starts designing and sewing her own outfits, launches a sewing blog, and even opens an Etsy shop. The book series is full of cute ideas and clever titles.
Recently, my daughter got this adorable LEGO Friends set featuring a sewing machine, scissors, camera, and laptop. The set comes with a story about Emma running an e-shop selling hair bows. Watching her interact with the set reminds me of those felt bow tutorials I’ve bookmarked.

On the TV front, the fourth season of The Great British Sewing Bee was supposed to premiere May 5th, but it looks like it's been postponed. I’m bummed because I’m a huge fan of the show. We were lucky enough to have Matt Chapple from season three and Lauren Guthrie from season one visit last year. By the way, did you hear that Lauren had her first baby this month?
Here are some interesting finds from around the web:
- I’m planning to do more hiking, so I’ve been researching hiking shoes. Came across this cool article about upcycling old jeans into footwear. It’s such a sustainable idea!
- Speaking of feet, I adore my organic cotton socks from Little River Sock Mill. They’re made in the USA, and they’re super comfy. Highly recommended!
- Watch this video about an artist who mends torn clothes for free on San Francisco sidewalks. He’s been doing it since 2002—it’s heartwarming stuff!
- Found this adorable hand-embroidered cat alphabet. Perfect for any cat lover!
- Ever heard of “Cat Island†in Japan? After watching a one-minute video about it, I’m seriously considering adding it to my travel bucket list.
- Edible cutlery—how cool is that? You can eat your food with it, then eat the utensil itself!
- Hancock Fabrics is closing down. If you’re in the US, now’s the time to stock up on sewing supplies while you still can.
- Don’t forget, Me Made May kicks off this weekend. It’s been happening since 2010! Snap pics of your handmade outfits and tag them with #MMMay16 on Instagram.
Have a fantastic weekend!
