debbie’s geneva peplum
Debbie from the Advisors Circle took one of Liesl’s inspirational looks for the Geneva V-Neck Blouse and ran with it. Here she is to share her experience of modifying the pattern to create a peplum blouse.
Hey everyone! I absolutely adore both versions of the Geneva V-Neck Blouse, so I was thrilled when I got the chance to make one. Recently, I fell in love with some Birch Organics lawn fabric and thought it would be perfect for the long-sleeve version for fall.
Even though I really like the pattern, I tend to dress quite casually and wasn't keen on a blouse that needed to be tucked in. As I was pondering how to handle the hem, I revisited Liesl’s inspirations, particularly the version featuring the ruffled peplum. With some encouragement from Liesl, I decided that this style would suit me perfectly.
I measured between sizes 4 and 6 for this pattern and ultimately went with a size 6 since I wanted a relaxed fit. I created a muslin using the straight size 6 (without sleeves). The muslin fit well, but I debated whether to make a forward shoulder adjustment. It was challenging to assess the fit alone, so I wish I had asked someone else for their input. In the end, I decided against making that adjustment. Looking back at the photos now, I realize I should definitely do that on my next blouse.
I decided to start the peplum, which is about seven inches long, at high hip level. I doubled the width of the peplum; it's quite similar to the Gelato Blouse. I opted for the full button placket, but since the sizing is fairly generous, it would also work to stop the placket at the peplum. As I hadn’t included the sleeves in the muslin, I made them without any adjustments.
This was my first time working with lawn fabric, and I hadn’t anticipated just how lightweight and breezy it would be. I still love this version of the blouse, but it won’t get much wear until spring. I can’t wait to sew another one in flannel, sans the peplum. I’ll also extend the sleeves by a few inches.
I’m still getting the hang of custom fitting patterns. I should have included the sleeves in the muslin to check the length, but I’m gaining more confidence in making pattern changes and adjustments. I’d love to try again with a deeper, less voluminous peplum. This is also a fantastic beginner pattern! The instructions are super clear, and it’s beginner-friendly with no collar or cuffs. I can see myself making several more of these in the future!
Overall, this project has been a rewarding learning experience. I’ve discovered that taking the time to understand your body type and fabric characteristics can make a huge difference in the final outcome. Even though I encountered a few challenges along the way, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and can’t wait to dive into my next sewing adventure. Sewing is such a creative outlet, and I’m excited to explore even more patterns and techniques in the future!
