Take off the high heels and walk barefoot

Ben Wang, September 07 – High heels have always been a symbol of elegance and femininity. They make women feel more confident and attractive, but behind the glamour lies a hidden cost to health. Recently, the U.S. "Discovery Channel" reported that the discomfort caused by high heels—such as leg pain, foot aches, and long-term strain—is not something that can be easily resolved. In fact, new research shows that the damage from wearing high heels is not temporary, but rather long-lasting and cumulative. In this study, researchers tested two types of high heels: one with a 5 cm heel and another with an 8.8 cm heel. Using sensors and cameras, they measured how the body reacts when walking in these shoes. The results revealed that wearing high heels forces the ankles inward, weakens ankle support, and increases pressure on the knees. These factors are linked to joint degeneration and the development of osteoarthritis over time. The higher the heel, the greater the risk of future health issues. Additionally, the study found that women who wear high heels five times a week may experience a 13% shortening of their calf muscles after just two years. The Achilles tendon also becomes stiffer, limiting the range of motion in the feet. As a result, when taking off the shoes and walking barefoot, many women report a sore feeling in their calves and find it harder to run or engage in physical activities. While there is still debate about the overall impact of high heels on health, it's unrealistic to completely ban them. However, there are ways to minimize the harm. First, limit heel height to no more than 5 cm. Second, avoid running or rushing in high heels, especially in crowded places like buses or subways. Third, when walking, consciously move your heel back to protect your toes. Regular stretching exercises, such as toe stretches, can help relieve some of the side effects. After a long day, walking barefoot at home can also help reduce injury risk.
